Common Sheep Health Problems and How to Spot Them

Why Sheep Hide Illness

Sheep are prey animals that instinctively mask signs of weakness, which means illness can progress significantly before obvious symptoms appear. Regular observation and knowing the early warning signs of common sheep health problems helps you intervene before a minor issue becomes a flock-wide crisis.

Internal Parasites

Barber pole worm and other internal parasites are among the biggest health threats to sheep, especially in warm, humid climates. Watch for pale eyelids (checked using the FAMACHA scoring system), bottle jaw, weight loss, and poor coat condition as signs of a heavy parasite load.

Foot Rot

Foot rot is a highly contagious bacterial infection that thrives in wet, muddy conditions, causing lameness, foul odor, and separation of the hoof wall. Keeping pens dry, regular hoof trimming, and prompt treatment of affected animals help prevent it from spreading through the flock.

Pregnancy Toxemia

Pregnancy toxemia, sometimes called twin lamb disease, occurs when a ewe carrying multiples doesn’t get enough energy in late pregnancy, leading to weakness, disorientation, and potentially death. Proper late-gestation nutrition is the best prevention for this serious metabolic condition.

Bloat

Bloat occurs when gas builds up in the rumen and cannot escape, causing visible abdominal swelling and distress that can be fatal within hours if untreated. Sudden diet changes, especially rich pasture or grain, are common triggers, so transitioning feed gradually helps reduce risk.

Building a Flock Health Routine

Regular body condition checks, FAMACHA scoring, hoof trims, and a solid vaccination and deworming schedule form the backbone of a healthy flock. Partnering with a livestock veterinarian familiar with sheep helps you build a program suited to your region’s specific disease pressures.
