Working With Cattle Instincts
Cattle are prey animals with wide-angle vision and a strong instinct to move away from perceived pressure, and low-stress handling simply means working with those instincts instead of against them. Understanding a cow’s flight zone and point of balance lets a handler move animals calmly by applying and releasing gentle pressure rather than yelling, waving arms, or using excessive force.
Putting It Into Practice
Move slowly and predictably, approach at an angle rather than straight on, and step back the moment an animal responds correctly to reward the behavior. Reducing noise, sudden movement, and unnecessary use of electric prods lowers cortisol levels in cattle, which translates to less bruising, better weight gain, and safer working conditions for handlers. Many ranchers find that once cattle trust the routine, entire herds become noticeably easier to move and sort.
