Why Ducks Might Suit You
Ducks are hardier than chickens in many ways, tend to be less prone to common poultry diseases, and are excellent at controlling slugs and insects around the yard. They do need access to water deep enough to dunk their heads for cleaning their eyes and nostrils, though a simple tub works fine for small flocks that don’t have a pond.
Basic Care Requirements
Ducks need a secure shelter at night to protect them from predators, fresh water for both drinking and bathing, and a diet formulated for waterfowl since standard chicken feed lacks adequate niacin for healthy leg development. Bedding gets wet quickly with ducks around, so plan on cleaning coops more often than you might with chickens. Most breeds are calm, social, and make a great addition to a small flock.
