Transitioning Livestock to a New Feed Without Digestive Upset

Why Sudden Changes Cause Problems

The microbes living in a ruminant’s gut are specialized for whatever feed they’ve been eating, and an abrupt switch, especially to richer grain-based feed, can throw that microbial population out of balance. This can lead to bloat, acidosis, or diarrhea, all of which are avoidable with a gradual transition plan.

A Safer Transition Plan

Blend the new feed with the old over seven to ten days, gradually increasing the proportion of new feed each day rather than switching all at once. Watch manure consistency and appetite closely during the changeover, and slow the process further if you notice loose stool or reduced intake. This same gradual approach applies whether you’re changing hay sources, switching grain brands, or moving animals onto lush spring pasture.
