Choosing the Right Grass Species for Your Livestock Pasture

Not All Pasture Grass Is the Same

Grass species vary widely in their tolerance for grazing pressure, drought, cold, and soil type, meaning the right choice for one farm may perform poorly on another. Selecting species suited to your specific climate and management style sets the foundation for a productive, long-lasting pasture.

Cool-Season Grasses

Cool-season grasses like tall fescue, orchardgrass, and timothy grow most vigorously in spring and fall, going somewhat dormant during hot summer months. These species work well in northern and temperate climates and often pair well with legumes like clover to boost overall forage quality.

Warm-Season Grasses

Warm-season grasses such as bermudagrass and bahiagrass thrive in hot summer conditions and are well suited to southern climates where cool-season species struggle during peak heat. These grasses often provide excellent summer grazing but require different management than cool-season pastures.

Legumes as a Pasture Component

Incorporating legumes like clover or alfalfa alongside grasses improves overall forage protein content and can reduce the need for nitrogen fertilizer, since legumes fix their own nitrogen from the atmosphere. A balanced grass-legume mix often outperforms a grass-only pasture in both yield and quality.

Matching Species to Grazing Pressure

Some grass species tolerate close, frequent grazing better than others, while species with higher growing points are more vulnerable to damage from overgrazing. Understanding your intended grazing intensity helps guide which species will hold up best over time.

Getting Region-Specific Recommendations

Local growing conditions vary enormously, so consulting with your extension office or experienced local producers for region-specific species and variety recommendations is far more valuable than generic national advice.
