Rotational Grazing for Cattle: Boosting Pasture and Herd Health

Why Rotate Pastures

Rotational grazing means moving cattle between smaller paddocks instead of letting them roam one large pasture continuously. This gives grazed areas time to rest and regrow, which improves forage quality, reduces bare soil, and helps control parasites since larvae die off before cattle return. Ranchers who switch to rotational systems often see thicker stands of grass and can carry more animals on the same acreage over time.

Getting Started

Start simple by dividing an existing pasture into three or four sections using portable electric fencing. Move the herd every three to seven days depending on grass growth and herd size, and watch that plants are grazed to a few inches rather than down to bare dirt. As you gain experience, you can add more paddocks and shorten grazing periods for even better pasture recovery and herd performance.
