The Benefits of Moving Sheep Often
Sheep graze close to the ground, which makes them especially effective at controlling parasite larvae when paddocks are rested between grazing periods. Moving your flock every few days to fresh grass improves forage quality, reduces internal parasite loads, and keeps pastures more productive throughout the season compared to leaving sheep on one field continuously.
Setting Up a Simple System
Portable electric netting is the easiest way for small flocks to start rotational grazing, since it can be moved by one person and keeps sheep contained while deterring most predators. Divide your available land into paddocks sized for your flock, and aim to move sheep before grass is grazed shorter than two to three inches. Track rest periods so paddocks get four to six weeks to recover before sheep return.
