Shearing Basics: When and How to Shear Your Flock

Timing Your Shearing

Most wool breeds need shearing once a year, typically in spring before hot weather sets in, though some farms shear in early winter and provide shelter to protect newly shorn sheep from cold snaps. Shearing too early can leave sheep vulnerable to a late frost, while waiting too long risks heat stress and a heavier, dirtier fleece that is harder to process and worth less to buyers.

Doing It Right

Keep sheep dry for at least a day before shearing, since damp wool is harder to cut and more prone to mold in storage. Many small flock owners hire a professional shearer, which is worth the cost since experienced shearers work quickly and reduce the risk of nicks or excessive stress on the animal. Afterward, check each sheep for cuts and keep newly shorn animals somewhere sheltered until their body adjusts to the temperature change.
