Assessing Land and Infrastructure
Before bringing home any animals, take a hard look at whether your property can actually support them. Consider available pasture acreage, soil quality, water access, and existing fencing condition, since repairing or building fence is one of the most expensive early costs new livestock owners face. Drainage matters too, since low, wet areas can become muddy, disease-prone problem spots.
Checking Rules and Realities
Confirm local zoning and any homeowners association rules allow the livestock you’re planning, since restrictions vary widely even between neighboring properties. Talk to neighbors about existing predator pressure in the area, and consider proximity to a veterinarian, feed store, and processing facilities if that matters for your goals. A property that looks perfect on paper can be impractical if basic support services are hours away.
