What Makes Geese Different
Geese are largely grass-grazing birds, needing far less commercial feed than chickens once they’re past the goslings stage, and they can thrive on good pasture supplemented with a small amount of grain. They’re also naturally alert and vocal, which makes them surprisingly effective at announcing the arrival of predators or visitors, though this same trait means they aren’t always the quietest neighbors.
Housing and Temperament
Geese need access to water for bathing and mating success, along with simple, draft-free shelter at night. Many breeds can be territorial, especially ganders during breeding season, so new owners should handle young geese frequently to keep them comfortable around people. With a bit of space and basic shelter, geese are a low-maintenance addition that can live well beyond a decade with good care.
