Why Bored Pigs Cause Problems
Pigs are intelligent, curious animals, and without something to occupy their attention they can become destructive, aggressive toward pen mates, or develop repetitive behaviors like bar-biting. Rooting is a deeply ingrained natural behavior, and pigs kept on bare concrete with nothing to root through often redirect that instinct toward fences, feeders, or each other.
Simple Enrichment Ideas
Straw bedding, logs, or a dedicated rooting area filled with dirt or mulch give pigs an outlet for natural behavior and can be refreshed cheaply and often. Rotating toys like sturdy balls or hanging chains keeps novelty high, since pigs quickly lose interest in objects that never change. Providing enough space per animal and adequate feeder access also reduces the competition that often triggers aggression in group housing.
