Budgeting Before You Buy
Raising a pig for freezer pork or breeding stock involves more than just the purchase price of the animal itself. Understanding the full cost picture helps you decide whether raising your own pork actually makes financial sense compared to buying meat from a local producer.
Purchase Price
Feeder pigs typically cost more per animal than weaner pigs, but come with less risk and a shorter path to market weight, which should factor into your overall cost comparison. Registered breeding stock costs significantly more than pigs intended purely for meat production.
Feed Costs
Feed is by far the largest ongoing expense in raising a pig, since pigs consume several pounds of feed per pound of weight gained over their lifetime. Feed costs fluctuate with grain markets, so budgeting with some buffer for price increases is wise, especially for a multi-month feeding period.
Housing and Fencing
If you don’t already have pig-appropriate shelter and fencing, factor in these one-time infrastructure costs, which can be substantial for a first-time pig owner. These costs are typically spread across many years and multiple batches of pigs, reducing the per-pig cost over time.
Processing Costs
If you’re raising pigs for meat, budget for processing fees at a USDA-inspected or custom facility, which typically charge based on hanging weight plus cut-and-wrap fees. These processing costs are often overlooked by first-time pig owners but represent a significant portion of the total cost per pound of finished pork.
Is Raising Your Own Pork Worth It?
When you add up feed, purchase price, and processing costs, home-raised pork often costs a similar amount per pound as high-quality retail pork, but many owners find the superior quality, control over raising practices, and satisfaction of the project well worth it.
