How to Store Hay and Feed to Prevent Spoilage

Why Storage Matters as Much as Quality

Even the highest quality hay can lose most of its nutritional value if stored poorly, while good storage practices can preserve nutrition and dramatically reduce waste. Since hay and feed represent one of the largest ongoing costs for most livestock operations, protecting that investment is worth the effort.

Keeping Hay Off the Ground

Storing hay directly on dirt or grass allows moisture to wick up into the bottom layer, causing mold and spoilage that can render an entire bale unusable. Pallets, gravel pads, or a raised wooden platform create an air gap that dramatically reduces ground moisture damage.

Covering Hay from the Elements

A dedicated hay barn or shed is ideal, but if that’s not available, a quality tarp secured tightly over stacked bales offers meaningful protection from rain and snow. Leaving hay fully exposed to weather can result in significant spoilage within just the outer few inches of each bale, adding up to substantial losses over a stack.

Airflow and Stacking

Good airflow between and around hay stacks helps prevent condensation and mold growth, so avoid stacking bales too tightly against solid walls or in areas with poor ventilation. Leaving small gaps between rows allows air to circulate and moisture to escape.

Storing Bagged Feed

Bagged grain and pelleted feeds should be stored in a cool, dry location, ideally in rodent-proof containers, since pests can quickly contaminate and waste stored feed. Rotating stock so older feed is used first prevents nutrient degradation from feed sitting too long before use.

Monitoring Stored Feed

Periodically check stored hay and feed for signs of mold, heating, or pest activity, since catching problems early prevents them from spreading to unaffected portions of your stockpile. A musty smell or visible dust when handling hay are both warning signs worth investigating.
