Pasture and Turnout Management for Horses

Matching Pasture to Horses

Horses evolved to graze nearly around the clock on varied terrain, so turnout time is important for both their physical and mental health. However, lush spring pasture can be too rich for easy keepers or horses prone to laminitis, so introducing turnout gradually and using a grazing muzzle when needed helps prevent problems. Rotating paddocks also keeps grass healthier and reduces parasite loads compared to continuous grazing on the same ground.

Safety Considerations

Walk pastures regularly to check fencing, remove debris, and look for toxic plants that horses might otherwise avoid unless grass is scarce. Provide shade and a reliable water source in every turnout area, and separate horses by temperament or body condition where needed to prevent bullying or unwanted weight gain. Good pasture management pays off in fewer injuries and healthier, calmer horses.
