Daily Grooming Basics
A simple grooming routine before and after riding keeps a horse’s coat and skin healthy while giving you a chance to spot cuts, swelling, or heat that might signal a problem. Start with a curry comb in circular motions to loosen dirt and dead hair, follow with a stiff brush to remove debris, then finish with a soft brush for a smooth coat. Always pick out hooves to check for stones, thrush, or embedded objects.
Building the Habit
Grooming is also a valuable bonding and desensitizing exercise, especially for younger or newer horses, since it builds trust and gets them comfortable being touched all over. Keep a dedicated grooming kit clean and organized, and take the extra few minutes to check mane, tail, and legs for burrs, ticks, or minor wounds. A consistent routine often catches small problems before they become expensive ones.
