Pigs Need More Than You Might Think
Pigs are intelligent, strong, and notorious for testing weak spots in housing and fencing, making solid infrastructure essential from day one. Investing in proper housing and fencing upfront saves significant frustration and repair costs down the road.
Shelter Requirements
Pigs need protection from direct sun, wind, and precipitation, along with a dry place to sleep, since they cannot regulate body temperature as efficiently as some other livestock. A simple three-sided shelter with deep bedding works well for most climates, while hot regions require additional shade and possibly a wallow for cooling.
Fencing That Actually Holds Pigs
Standard woven wire or field fence often isn’t strong enough on its own, since pigs will root underneath and push through weak points using their powerful snouts and shoulders. Adding a strand of electric wire at snout height, roughly 6 to 8 inches off the ground, dramatically improves containment by teaching pigs to respect the fence line.
Rooting and Wallowing Behavior
Rooting is a natural pig behavior that can quickly destroy pasture if not managed, so many producers rotate pigs through paddocks to prevent long-term land damage. Providing a designated wallow area, even a simple mud puddle, satisfies this natural behavior while protecting the rest of the pasture.
Space Requirements
Overcrowding leads to stress, fighting, and disease spread, so give pigs adequate space based on their size and number, typically expanding as they grow toward market weight. Outdoor, pasture-based systems generally require more total space than indoor confinement but offer better welfare outcomes.
Water Access
Pigs need constant access to clean water, and a reliable, leak-proof watering system is worth the investment since pigs are also notorious for damaging poorly designed waterers.
