Why Introductions Go Wrong
Goats live by a strict pecking order, and dropping a new goat straight into an established herd often triggers head-butting, chasing, and stress for everyone involved. This is especially risky for smaller or younger goats who can be injured or blocked from food and water by more dominant herd members. A little patience during introductions prevents most of these problems.
A Safer Introduction Process
Quarantine new goats for two to three weeks to protect herd health, then let them meet through a fence line so both sides get used to each other before direct contact. When you do combine them, do it in a neutral space with plenty of room to retreat, and provide multiple feeding and watering stations so no goat gets cornered. Supervise the first few days closely and separate again if fighting becomes intense rather than typical order-establishing behavior.
