Choosing the Right Pig Breed
Pig breeds vary widely in size, temperament, and growth rate, making breed selection an important early decision for any small farm. The right choice depends on whether you’re raising pigs for freezer pork, breeding stock, or a combination of both.
Berkshire
Berkshire pigs are prized for exceptional meat quality, including well-marbled, flavorful pork that commands premium prices with specialty butchers and chefs. They’re moderately sized, hardy, and well suited to outdoor or pasture-based systems.
Duroc
Durocs are known for fast growth, a calm temperament, and good mothering ability, making them a popular choice for both commercial and small-scale operations. Their reddish coloring and floppy ears make them easy to recognize in a mixed herd.
Hampshire
Hampshire pigs are lean, muscular, and known for producing a high percentage of quality meat relative to their size. Their black bodies with a distinctive white belt make them one of the more recognizable pig breeds.
Kunekune
Kunekune pigs are a small, docile breed originally from New Zealand, popular with homesteaders who want a manageable pasture pig without the size and rooting intensity of larger commercial breeds. They do well almost entirely on pasture and are known for their friendly, easygoing nature.
Choosing Based on Your Goals
If your priority is fast growth and lean meat for market, commercial breeds like Duroc or Hampshire are strong choices. If you want a smaller, easier-to-manage pig for a homestead setting, Kunekune or a heritage breed may be the better fit.
