What Pigs Actually Need
Pigs need surprisingly little to stay comfortable: a dry, draft-free space to sleep, shade in summer, and protection from wind and rain in winter. A three-sided shelter with the open side facing away from prevailing winds works well for most climates, and pigs will happily burrow into deep straw bedding to stay warm without any heating required in all but the harshest cold.
Budget-Friendly Build Options
Repurposed materials like old livestock panels, pallets, or a converted shed can make a perfectly functional pig shelter without a big investment. Keep the structure low to the ground and well-anchored, since pigs are strong and will test loose boards or panels. Make sure the roof sheds water well and that bedding stays dry, since damp bedding is one of the fastest ways to invite illness.
