Why Water Gets Overlooked
Farmers often focus heavily on feed formulation while treating water as an afterthought, yet inadequate water intake reduces feed consumption, slows growth, and can trigger serious health problems faster than almost any nutritional deficiency. Water needs increase significantly with heat, lactation, and higher feed intake, so a system sized for average conditions may fall short during the exact periods animals need it most.
Getting It Right
Check troughs and waterers daily for cleanliness and flow rate, and make sure there’s enough total capacity for every animal to drink without long waits, especially in group housing. Algae growth, ice in winter, and clogged float valves are common hidden problems worth checking regularly. In extensive grazing operations, mapping water sources against pasture layout ensures no animal has to travel too far to drink.
