A Universal Management Tool
Body condition scoring gives farmers a hands-on, visual way to track whether animals are carrying too little or too much fat cover relative to their frame, and every major livestock species has its own scale, typically ranging from one (emaciated) to five or nine depending on the species. Regular scoring catches nutrition problems before they show up as poor growth, low milk production, or reproductive failure.
Using Scores to Adjust Feeding
Score animals by hand at key points like the ribs, spine, and hip bones rather than relying on visual assessment alone, since heavy coats or wool can hide true condition. Track scores over time for each animal or group, and use trends to adjust rations well before an animal becomes too thin or too heavy. Scoring at consistent intervals, such as before breeding season or before winter, makes the practice much more useful.
