Diseases to Watch For
Goats are susceptible to a handful of diseases that every owner should recognize, including caseous lymphadenitis, coccidiosis in kids, and caprine arthritis encephalitis, which can spread through a herd if left unmanaged. Symptoms range from abscesses and weight loss to diarrhea and stiff joints, and many conditions look similar at first glance, which is why an accurate diagnosis from a veterinarian matters before starting treatment.
Prevention Through Management
Good biosecurity prevents far more problems than treatment ever will. Quarantine new goats for at least two weeks before introducing them to the herd, keep housing clean and dry, and avoid overcrowding, which lets disease spread quickly. Regular fecal testing, a solid vaccination schedule worked out with your vet, and culling chronically sick animals all help keep a goat herd healthy long term.
