Recognizing a Mismatch
Not every livestock guardian dog placement works out on the first try, and recognizing the signs early saves stress for you, the dog, and your animals. Warning signs include chasing or injuring livestock, excessive roaming, ignoring the herd entirely, or persistent aggression toward people making routine farm visits.
Working Through Problems Before Giving Up
Many issues stem from insufficient bonding time, too much freedom too soon, or a young dog simply not being mature enough yet, since most LGD breeds don’t fully settle into their role until two years old. Increasing supervised time with livestock, tightening containment, and working with an experienced breeder or trainer can turn many situations around. If safety issues persist despite real effort, rehoming to a more suitable situation is sometimes the responsible choice.
