Routine Health Maintenance
Livestock guardian dogs need the same core vaccinations as any working dog, along with regular deworming and flea and tick prevention, which matters even more given how much time they spend outdoors in brush and pasture. Annual veterinary checkups help catch joint issues early, since large-breed LGDs are prone to hip and elbow problems that can shorten their working years if untreated.
Injuries to Watch For
Because LGDs actively confront predators, bite wounds, torn ear tips, and cut pads are common injuries worth checking for during regular grooming and handling sessions. Keep a basic first aid kit on hand for cleaning and bandaging minor wounds, and don’t hesitate to call a vet for anything deep, swollen, or slow to heal, since infections can take hold quickly in working dogs that are constantly outdoors.
