Why Boundary Training Matters
A livestock guardian dog that wanders off the property can’t protect your animals and may create conflict with neighbors or get into dangerous situations on roads. Boundary training teaches a young LGD where its territory ends, which is just as important as bonding it to the livestock it will guard.
Building Good Habits Early
Start with secure, well-maintained fencing since no amount of training substitutes for a physical barrier, especially with young dogs still learning. Walk the fence line with your dog regularly so it learns the boundary by routine, and consider a properly introduced electric containment line as a backup rather than a primary tool. Reward calm behavior near the fence and correct fence-testing or digging promptly and consistently so the boundary becomes second nature.
