Shelter Needs Vary by Climate
Horses are surprisingly hardy in cold weather thanks to their thick winter coats, but they still need protection from wind, driving rain, and extreme heat. The right shelter setup depends heavily on your climate, herd size, and whether horses are kept in stalls or on pasture.
Run-In Sheds
A three-sided run-in shed is one of the simplest and most effective shelter solutions for pastured horses, giving them the choice to escape wind and precipitation while still allowing free movement. Position the open side away from prevailing winds and make sure the shed is large enough that lower-ranking horses aren’t blocked out by dominant herd members.
Stall Sizing and Design
A standard box stall should be at least 12 by 12 feet for an average-sized horse, with larger stalls needed for bigger breeds or mares with foals. Good ventilation is critical, since poor air flow contributes to respiratory problems, even in stalls that feel warm and comfortable to humans.
Flooring and Bedding
Stall flooring should provide good drainage and cushioning, with options ranging from packed clay to rubber mats topped with shavings or straw bedding. Whatever material you choose, deep, clean, dry bedding reduces the risk of thrush and other moisture-related hoof problems.
Ventilation and Air Quality
Ammonia buildup from urine and manure is a major contributor to respiratory disease in stalled horses, making regular mucking and good airflow essential. Many barns benefit from ridge vents or fans to keep air moving, even in colder months.
Fencing Considerations
Whatever shelter you choose, pair it with safe, visible fencing free of sharp edges or loose wire, since injuries from fencing are among the most common preventable horse injuries. Wood, vinyl, and well-maintained electric fencing are all popular safe options.
